Beyond The Sea x "Perfect" (Track 3/12)

While overall I can admit that this gifset didn't quite accomplish everything I wanted it to do, it was interesting playing a little with the layout and I do love how the coloration came out.

This is a complicated song about complicated relationships and I have complicated feelings about it.

On on level, this is a song about a controlling perfectionistic parent. On another level, it's a song about being the child of a controlling perfectionistic parent, the messages they send, the messages you internalize, which you then say TO YOURSELF. And on a deeper level still, it's about learning to see your parents as people--flawed, imperfect, insecure, scared people. It's about learning why they loved you (or failed to) the way they did, and maybe learning to love them around those broken pieces--learning to love the parts of them that don't hurt and don't hurt you.

I realize I am Old Now and there are probably a fair number who never heard this song. It wasn't one of her big hits, never released as a single afaik. Reading the lyrics does not do it justice. There is so much anger and anguish in her voice. The way she screams the line in that last gif gives me shivers, and then it's right back to the sugary sad "look what you made me do" voice for the final chorus.

Why yes I do sometimes listen to it on repeat while crying about my relationship (and lack thereof) with my parents, and I'm pretty sure Scully does too.
